Economic Relief and Other Support
Many people are facing financial challenges due to the long period of restrictions and requirements to stay at home to slow the spread of coronavirus. Because of this, several official authorities are making assistance available to individuals and families.
National
- On 19 March, the Hungarian government announced a number of financial relief measures. These include relief for KATA taxpayers (small business lump sum tax) in affected sectors, rules on paying the rent for properties rented out for a purpose other than housing, exemption to pay taxes in affected sectors, and a moratorium on loan payments. Budapest VIII. District
- If you live in the 8th District (Józsefváros) you may be eligible for a Pandemic Allowance from the local government. Information on the Józsefváros Pandemic Allowance is available in English on who qualifies and how to apply. You will have to fill out the application form, which is provided by the district in Hungarian with English translation.
- The Józsefváros municipality has put up a webpage with full information in English about the municipality’s response to the coronavirus for residents of the 8th district. Information is also available (mostly in Hungarian) on the Józsefváros Facebook page

Budapest IX. District
- If you live in the 9th District (Ferencváros) you may be eligible for a Pandemic Allowance from the local government. Information on the Ferencváros Pandemic Allowance is available in English on who qualifies and how to apply. You will have to fill out the application form (available only in Hungarian).

- If you are a parent who does not speak Hungarian well, and your children are struggling with their school assignments, you can apply for Next Step’s new Online Homework Tutoring programme. A group of enthusiastic volunteers is available to help children manage their schoolwork during these unusual times. To apply, please fill out the application form, which will help the tutors better understand the needs of the children.

Lockdown, Restrictions, and Quarantine
- What does “lockdown” mean? What effect does it have on our ability to move around the city and country? For an overview, see the Hungarian Helsinki Committee’s information page on the lockdown. HHC has also put together a very thorough Question and Answer page that goes into a lot of detail on what you can and cannot do during a lockdown, and what your legal rights are. Find the Lockdown Q&A online or in PDF format.
- An excellent resource on rules, regulations, and legal rights related to Covid-19 has been put together by the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union, which is also offering an English-language free legal assistance phone service. You can also find more information on their website about what quarantine means according to Hungarian law.
Immigration Issues
- The Hungarian immigration office has been posting updates on its website, starting with general Information on changes in procedures related to the coronavirus crisis. More information about cancelled appointments and how to reach the immigration officeis also posted on their website.
- Foreigners should also be aware of changes in the dates of validity period of certain residence documents because of the coronavirus situation and the state of emergency declared by the Hungarian government.
- 🌐 The Hungarian Helsinki Committee has also posted information sheets about client services at the immigration office during the coronavirus pandemic. These can be downloaded from the Hungarian Helsinki Committee website in Spanish, French, Persian, Pashto, Arabic, and Kurdish.
Prevention and Protection

Apart from applying the rules of personal hygiene and social distancing that protect others from getting infected, you can offer people in need your direct help to do their shopping, paying cheques, etc. We advise that you should help most of all those sick and/or elderly people who live in your close vicinity.
